W/E 5/5/12
S Thom's cracking rainbow of 9lbs 10oz caught on the Island takes the heaviest fish of the month for April. In second place was R McLeary with another cracking rainbow of 7lbs 12oz, this time taken on the North.

As with last week, Black Buzzers, Trafficlight Buzzers, PT nymphs, Diawl Bach, yellow dancers and black and green lures and the range Blob are all working. In the calmer water the fish can be just below the surface taking buzzers, however if cold and windy they are lying deeper so intermediate and faster sinking lines are required.

While the evening sessions have been quite, those anglers that have gone out have had some good fishing despite there again being some cold nights last week.

30/4/12 Alex and Brian were on bailiff duty last night on a bitterly cold evening. Only 2 anglers were hardy enough (should that be fool hardy?) to brave the elements (Murray Ferguson and Rab Low) but they were rewarded with a great couple of hours sport. They came off the water after a couple of hours and weighed in 10 fish for 19lb, and returned several others (intermediate lines with Yellow Dancers or Orange Blobs doing the business). Alex and Brian also caught fish but returned them all.

W/E 28/4/12 Despite the cold weather all of the ponds continue to fish well, well plenty of fish being caught and returned on all 3 ponds. Black Buzzers, Trafficlight Buzzers, PT nymphs, Diawbach, yellow dancers and black and green lures are all working. In the calmer water the fish can be just below the surface taking buzzers, however if cold and windy they are lying deeper so intermediate and faster sinking lines are required.

While the evening sessions have been quite, those anglers that have gone out have had some good fishing despite there being some cold nights last week. Tom McKay was baillifing on Friday evening and despite a cold and windy night he went out and had 2 fish before the cold got to him this by 8pm, no other boats were out on Friday evening this probably due to the weather.

24/4/12 -
Well Bailiff Broon had his first session yesterday evening and a chilly one it was. Following the recent stocking most of the day boats on the Island Pond reported good numbers of fish with most of them being caught hard in to the bank. 2 visitors estimated that they had returned in the region of 20 fish. Things weren't quite as easy in the evening when the temperature had dropped, but some fish were caught. I managed 2 and lost one, while the only boat out on the Island kept 3 and returned 1. Things were a bit better over on the North where Harold Lewis kept 1 and returned 7.

W/E 21/4/12
The cooler weather last week made the fishing a little bit more difficult, but as can be seen from the returns all the waters continue to fish well with buzzers, yellow dancer & orange blobs all taking fish, these either on an intermediate , midge tip or floating line.

18/4/12 Dundee West End AC member Stuart Thom had a visit to the Island Pond to remember when he caught an absolutely cracking fish of 9lb 10oz (See the Club News page for photo.). Stuart was fishing in a club competition and was drifting off the Craigton bank when the fish took his black and silver fry imitation fished on an intermediate line. It took over 10 minutes to land, including failed attempts to get it into a net that was only just about big enough to hold it. It is by far the biggest trout that Stuart has ever caught and in his own words was "a fish of a lifetime.

W/E 14/4/12
The cooler weather last week made the fishing a bit more difficult, but as can be seen below all of the ponds are still fishing well. The evening sessions have now started and while Brian Wilkie and Alex Murray were taking and returning fish on buzzers, other anglers were taking fish with Orange Blobs and Yellow Dancers on fast intermediate lines. Richard Malkowski and Bob Stewart reported good sport on the North Pond this week with their 10 fish coming to black and green gold-heads and a fry imitation.

9/4/12
Visitor R McLeary had a cracking fish of 7lb 12oz off the North Pond today, unfortunately  I don't have any details of what he caught it on. However, Dave Roy reported success hard into the margins on the Island Pond with a gold-head hare's lug.

W/E 7/4/12 A bit of a quieter week this week, due mainly to the weather which prevented any fishing at all on the Tuesday.
Island Pond - 53 rods taking 101 fish for 192lb with several returned
North Pond - 19 rods taking 59 fish for 115lb with several returned
Crombie - 18 rods taking 61 fish for 56lb with lots returned

7/4/12 Spent a few very chilly hours on the Island Pond today, but despite the cold wind there were still fishing rising around the margins. We kept 4 for 8lb, returned 1 and missed a few knocks during our 5 hours on the water. Most of the fish were taken on a small black and green gold head fished on an intermediate line, although we also had fish on small green buzzers and I know that the bailiff was also taking fish on buzzers. Amazingly, we were the only boat out today, very strange given how well the water is fishing.

2/4/12
The fish are still lying in the shallow water around the Islands or edges taking flies that are hatching off the trees or undergrowth. There is a good hatch of very small buzzers on the go with fish taking these both as dries and buzzers. Small flies seem to be taken more readily with size 16 Deer Hare emerger working well today even though the temperature was only +4c. Pheasant Tail and Traffic Light buzzer both size 14 or 16 fished below the dry emerger worked well with the emerger acting as a sight indicator using a very slow retrieve just to keep in contact. The naturals are very small and larger dries or nymphs or lures aren't being taken with any confidence or simply ignored.

Returns for the week ending 31 March:
Island - 115 rods taking 231 fish for 452lb plus fish returned
North - 30 rods taking 119 fish for 232lb plus fish returned
Crombie - 30 rods taking 42 fish for 39lbs – most anglers are returning the majority of their fish caught on Crombie.

Clubs Out:
Dundee AC with 8 boats on the Island taking 35 fish for 66lbs
Birkhill AC with 5 boats on the Island taking 24 fish for 47lbs 2oz

Visitor, D Westwood, had a cracking fish of 6lb 13oz off the Island on Wednesday.

W/E 24/3/12 Another good week on the Monikie waters with all of the ponds returning good numbers of fish. Even though over 30 limit bags have been taken over the week, the request by the committee that anglers show some restraint in the early season and fish catch and release appears to have been taken onboard by members and visitors alike with many only keeping 2 or 3 fish and then returning fish - well done folks.

The usual early season tactics are working with Montana nymph, Viva, Ace of Spades all working well. Fish are lying in the shallow water around the islands and edges. The brighter conditions at the end of the week have put the fish down  2-3 feet with Cormorants and buzzers working well when allowed to sink that little bit.

Island Pond - 99 rods taking 396 fish for 713lb with several returned
North Pond - 18 rods taking 76 fish for 149lb with several returned
Crombie - 17 rods taking 34 fish for 35lb with lots returned.

Khats Whiskers AC had 6 boats on the Island Pond taking 59 fish for 116lb.
